Why bother with people? (Greg @ Field)
Monday Jun 27, 2011
Monday Jun 27, 2011
The short answer is, 'because God does.' Jacob's Well is not your typical church (understatement), in part because we feel it is our job to do more than take care of the people already here; us. In fact we have this feeling deep down in our guts that the only way to really take care of the people who are here is to be
fundamentally about the people who aren't here. Not yet anyway... It's a Jesus thing. It fights our instincts. It makes us worry about whether our needs are going to be met. It's faith.

Why bother with trying? (Greg @ Field)

“I’m a good person. I don’t lie and cheat. I treat people fairly and give money to charities. I love my family. I’m not perfect, but who is? So isn’t that enough?” You’ve heard it, maybe said it. So why does God expect all this other stuff. Praying, reading the Bible, serving, worshipping, It’s all a lot of work none of us have time for and face it, Christians haven’t fixed the world that way anyway. Why bother even trying? It’s a good question.

Why bother with God (Greg @ Field)
Monday Jun 06, 2011
Monday Jun 06, 2011
We just spent a month asking “what if…?” but that’s not the only question that matters. We also need to remember why we’re doing what we’re doing and ask if it really makes any difference. Afterall it takes a lot of work and you’ve only got one life to spend. During the month of June we are going to get back to the basics. Remember who we are, what God has in mind for us and how we can do that the best. Join us and get excited about:
Why bother with God?
Why bother with church?
Why bother with trying?
Why bother with people?
It’s God’s vision and our lives. At work. Together.

What if: kids really do understand the Kingdom of God best? (Peter @ Field)

Ask any adult if they can sing. Most people you ask will hem and haw, get nervous, and say no. Now ask any kid. Most won’t even blink, they might even just start singing! Why not? It isn’t that hard. What happens? Where does all that eagerness and confidence go? In a profound teaching moment, Jesus encouraged his disciples (and us) to have a child-like faith. This is the last week in our “What if…?” series and we’re going to bring the whole community kids to grups (grownups) together, to wrestle with what child-like faith looks like. Roll up your sleeves and get your hands a little dirty, I’m guessing it might just be a finger-painted masterpiece.

Here’s what happens: We keep things that threaten us away from us. If we can’t keep them away, we try to get rid of them, or make them into something that doesn’t threaten us. That’s all well and good, except that often times the reason we feel threatened is just because something is different; it's only our comfort level that is threatened. What if we didn’t have to worry about that? What if those other ideas, people, practices held the piece we were always missing? God loves different. God loves new. Let’s learn how to see the world like God. We welcome Improv Artist Joe Bozic to help us learn how.

What if: we lived it and didn't just believe it? (Dawn @ Field)

The news has been interesting these last days. Many faithful Christians think that Osama bin Laden was rightly hunted down and killed. Many other faithful Christians think that he should not have been. The reasons behind these two positions vary from ideological to practical and everything in between. But it makes the question extremely salient: not just ‘what if’ but ‘how’ do we actually live out what we believe? This is bound to be a very interesting can of worms to open!

What if: religion united instead of divided people? (Peter @ Field)
Monday May 09, 2011
Monday May 09, 2011
“What if… ?” is about asking some simple questions without simple answers. This week, we’ll take on a question that is historically more likely to start a war than bring peace. There’s Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, even Zoroastrianism. And then there’s Christianity with Catholics and Protestants and Orthodox and Evangelicals. And within all of these, there are the sub-divisions and the sub-divisions of the sub-divisions. Is this really what God had in mind? Maybe. But if so, why are we seemingly incapable of being drawn together and work so hard to stay divided? God teaches love, kindness and forgiveness. So why do some people believe their religion is the one and only? Let’s come together and challenge ourselves by asking some of these questions.

What if: love really did win? (Dawn @ Field)
Sunday May 01, 2011
Sunday May 01, 2011
We’re about to dive into a series called What If? And we’re not going to mess around, we’re coming right out of the chute with one of the ultimate ‘what if’s’…what if love really did win? And while my skeptical side wants to reply with statements such as ‘Define win.’, and ‘Define love.’, or questions such as ‘At what point?’ and ‘What if pigs could fly?’, the side of me that believes in a God who regularly makes the impossible possible and regularly moves in ways that seem counter-intuitive to me, that side of me is forced to give it a hearing. It would be good if you were part of the discussion, and it would be even better if some of your friends came along too!
