Real People: What I learned driving a forklift (Greg)
Friday Jun 01, 2012
Friday Jun 01, 2012
I was first going to be a scientist, then a theologian and along the way got turned into a preacher. What I never figured I'd do was drive forklift, but a summer job doing that not only helped pay for college, it taught me some of the best life lessons I've ever received. Funny how God isn't restricted to the 'official channels' to give us what we need. God gets unleashed in the alleys behind the classroom. This Sunday I'll share some of what I learned driving forklift. What have you/are you learning on the side streets of your life? ~Greg

Real People: What I learned running a restaurant (Peter)
Sunday May 20, 2012
Sunday May 20, 2012
When I was 15, I walked from the kitchen and into the dining room of the restaurant for the first time. Who knew then that a part-time job as a busboy, setting tables and clearing plates would lead to a career in hospitality? Along the way I've encountered thousands of co-workers and hundreds of thousands of guests and expect that each one of them has affected me in ways big and small. Fifteen years ago, I opened the doors of my own restaurant and now I can't help but wonder how this experience has shaped me for the next phase of my life. God has been doing some pretty amazing things all along and in the process I've picked up a few insights that might be worth passing on. Sunday will be my last time preaching as an intern at Jacob's Well so I'd like to invite you into my world for a little while and see what we might discover together. ~Peter

Real People: What I learned from real life (Dawn and guests)
Thursday May 17, 2012
Thursday May 17, 2012
Believe it or not, the people in the Bible were realpeople who had no idea they were going to be "Bible people" or that there was even going to be a Bible. And what they learned came from real life. Most of what we need to know comes to us inreal life too. Starting May 13 we're going to take a month of Sundays and forget what we learned in seminary and church and talk about the life shaking and shaping stuff we learned where we might least (but ought to most) expect it. What's God showing you inreal life?

Whatever is beautiful and excellent (Greg)
Tuesday May 08, 2012
Tuesday May 08, 2012
This line from Philippians 4.8 calls us to surround ourselves with beauty and to be points of excellence - who wouldn't agree with that? But what about all the not-so-beautiful around us? And as for being excellent, isn't that for the 1%, not the 99% that most of us are? It's time to dive deeply into what God sees in these two virtues and how we wrap our lives around them. Beauty and excellence can change the world. They can change you.

Whatever is pure (Greg)
Thursday May 03, 2012
Thursday May 03, 2012
"Pure?!? You've got to be kidding! I mean, no one is in favor of IMpure, butpure is so... um, Victorian. Sure I want my food, air and water to bepure, but me?" I have a feeling that lots of people react this way to this topic. So what do you think? Isit worth a look past the moralizing that typifies this conversation to what God might have in mind? Maybe it's worth a look past our own defenses to see what God has in mind. Funny, 'pure' might be something we're actually looking for.

Whatever is true (Greg)
Sunday Apr 15, 2012
Sunday Apr 15, 2012
The Urban Dictionary defines 'whatever' this way, "A phrase used by slackers to indicate complete apathy. A dire warning concerning the future of America." Whatever...I don't think it's that bad. But is life a 'whatever'? Or are there some things worth being and doing no matter what? Twenty centuries ago someone wrote a list of words to live by, and said "Whatever is like these... that's what you want to spend your life on." They are some pretty vintage words, but maybe it's time for their kind of 'whatever.' Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is beautiful, if there is excellence, or anything worthy of praise, focus on these things! Philippians 4.8.

Easter - God's Life (Greg)
Monday Apr 09, 2012
Monday Apr 09, 2012
Over the past weeks we've looked at The Good Life and we've seen how God envisions our life's decisions, relationships and finances in dimensions that we could never imagine. God is basically a surprise. A big surprise. On Easter Sunday we are moving from our Good Life, to God's Life. Again, not what we'd expect. To see it is not just to glimpse something grander and more wonderful, but it is asks of us something that is so big, so deep, so real that it is more than a little frightening. That's how good it is. Would you want it any other way?
