December 8: Who invited the Shepherds?
Sunday Dec 08, 2013
Sunday Dec 08, 2013
Speaking for myself, I like to arrange my own special version of Christmas and have Jesus show up at it. That way I keep my life and faith the way I like them. Jesus doesn’t buy into that and the shepherds – the unholy, unkempt and unfavored guys in town – signal that. I guess God won’t be asking me to approve the invitation list to Jesus’ birthday party. So if you intend to show up at the stable, get ready. The party will be wild.

December 1: No one is ready for Angels
Sunday Dec 01, 2013
Sunday Dec 01, 2013
We love Christmas and the whole holiday season to be full of wonder and magic, but beyond our sentimentality we struggle with the actual story. Were there angels? Was Jesus born in a stable? Did Wise Men really show up following a travelling star? Ok, maybe the historicity of the details of the ‘God breaking into our world story’ are questionable, but the message needs to be heard. God is showing up, normal is different. Let’s listen with hearts as well as our heads.

11.24.13 Elephant in the Room 3: Elephants yet to be named… by you!
Sunday Nov 24, 2013
Sunday Nov 24, 2013
What elephants do you see? While we had input for all three weeks, we thought we’d leave this last week up to what we hadn’t thought about or hadn’t worked in. So let us know. Talking about the elephants in the room isn’t about wallowing in the mud holes of doubt but about exposing those mud holes to the light of day so they become solid ground to walk on. Healthy, thinking and honest communities name their elephants out loud. Ready?

11.17.13 Elephant in the Room 2: My World Is Bigger Than Your God
Sunday Nov 17, 2013
Sunday Nov 17, 2013
When we announced this series, the first elephant mentioned was “What if there is no God?” I guess that would pop the church balloon… “And since you asked, what if there isn’t a heaven? Or a hell? Are we supposed to think there is, or not? And what about my Muslim co-worker and the Buddhist my cousin married? And the Bible, don’t even get me started about the Bible…” Let’s get the elephants out in the light where we can see them. We can’t solve all these God issues, but we sure can keep them from tripping us up on this complicated journey of faith.

11.10.2013 The Elephant in the Room #1: The Rules are dead. ALL of them.
Sunday Nov 10, 2013
Sunday Nov 10, 2013
Have you seen this elephant in the corner? Here’s what it looks like: RULES. There are sooo many of them! From the 10 Commandments to things like “you’re supposed to go to church.” The Bible is full of rules and we ignore most of them, why do we get stuck on some of them? And if God really is all about relationships, then what role do rules play? Any you are wondering about?

The Wilderness Within.
Sunday Nov 03, 2013
Sunday Nov 03, 2013
So when was your last ‘vision quest’? The Bible may not require them but they sure happen a lot: Moses, Noah, Israel, Elijah, Jonah, John the Baptist, Jesus, Paul to name a few. Men are called into the wild to settle a score; not to prove they are manly, but to thrust them into an uncontrollable world where they face the forces that mold them. While that ‘quest’ might happen in a physical wilderness, the real wild is within. It is the battle for the heart, soul, mind and strength of a man. Let’s talk. Let’s journey.

It's not easy being a guy: Born for Adventure, or Determined to Conquer
Sunday Oct 27, 2013
Sunday Oct 27, 2013
Another part of being a guy that is great, but causes a lot of trouble, is their sense of adventure. It’s about exploring, experimenting, discovering, inventing and creating. What it’s not about is conquering. Conquering kills the adventure. God wants to call each of us on an adventure that takes all the skill, innovation, determination and strength we can muster, and it isn’t supposed to end. Let’s learn what God shows us about responding to that drive for adventure.

It's not easy being a guy: Nice is dangerous. Dangerous is nice.
Sunday Oct 20, 2013
Sunday Oct 20, 2013
Telling a man that he should be dangerous is dangerous. Telling a man to never be dangerous is dangerous in another way. Whether we like it or not, we live with the danger of men being dangerous. As people who honor what God has planted deep in our hearts, we need to both celebrate and warn each other of this wonder within our men or they will never be who they were born to be. Folks, this is hard stuff. It’s lifetime stuff. It’s time to look and wrestle with what we find.
