Into the Woods - Like it or not, life is going to take you there… into the woods, that is. Much of life happens there, much of who you are is created there; in that place of fascination, fear and definitely out of your control. This Sondheim musical, adapted for the screen and chock full of stars, mashes four of your favorite childhood fairy tales into one story that reveals a lot of truth about life. It also sounds a lot like what God is trying to show us. So take a walk into the woods with us. It’s okay. Everyone’s story is written in The Book of Life.  Or so the voice of Ice Cube tells us in this visually stunning animated film set against the backdrop of the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead.  When this funny, yet endearing tale of love and friendship dips down into the underworld, it brings up tricky questions about how to remember our past without letting it enslave our future, and how to write our own stories while helping other people write theirs.   See the trailer here!

Godflix 2 - Selma (August 16): Selma
is the story of a movement of people, led by Martin Luther King Jr., who
believed that love and dignity is not just for some. Through the
discipline of nonviolence, the stories of liberation and love in the
Bible, and a patient and active hope, mountains were moved. How can we
as Jacob’s Well keep moving those mountains of racism and
misunderstanding? Let’s work at it together.

Godflix 1 - The Imitation Game (August 9): One of my favorite JW-isms is "God doesn't play games." This powerful movie about the life of WWII code-breaker Alan Turing made me think maybe God does play a game, a very different game and plays it wholeheartedly. Not only are we all invited to play, but it is urgent that we do so. What if we stopped playing our imitation games and went all in on the game we are made for? Rent it at Redbox or stream on-line. But don't worry if you haven't seen it before Sunday. I'll fill you in without spoiling it for you! Have you ever noticed the mismatch between the idea of God creating a universe of overwhelming variety and expanse being the same God who is preoccupied with telling you what you can do and can't do? Well, a lot of your friends and neighbors have and it's partly why they don't have the time of day for God. This message digs into the God of Possibilities because it just makes more sense and because we need them!
