Zootopia is Disney’s brilliant effort at joining the national conversation on race, diversity and inclusivity – and with it they brought our kids into the debate. Zootopia reminds us that utopia would be nice, but as first rabbit police officer ever, Judy Hopps, discovers life is complicated and messy and only persistence and hard work get us anywhere close. While we dive into the film, we also heard what our Jacob’s Well young people made of these important themes during their week at Bay Lake Camp.

Mad Max: Fury Road paints a bleak, violent picture of life in an ecologically devastated world. Survival means warring over scarce resources; the violent demagogues in power require the sacrifice of laborers in order to keep what’s left of civilization alive. Sound eerily familiar? What can this dystopian action movie teach us about living in a world creeping ever closer towards ecological apocalypse? Winner of 6 Academy Awards; don’t mistake this for just another action movie with car chases and explosions!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens leaves aspiring Jedi on Earth wishing the Force could be real. “I’ve seen a lot of strange stuff, but I’ve never seen anything to make me believe there’s one all-powerful force controlling everything.” (Han Solo) But what if the Force actually is, in some sense, real? What if God helps us shape our futures? What if the Holy Spirit we hear churches talking about isn’t some guy dressed up in a hole-y sheet on Halloween, but a guiding force that we can choose to let influence our day-to-day decisions? This is where the science fiction of Star Wars collides (forcefully) with my theological reality. “It’s true. All of it.” (Han Solo)

Brooklyn had 3 Oscar nominations for a reason. Its cinematography is gorgeous, authentic to early 50’s NYC & Ireland, and it is beautifully acted and produced, but that’s the frosting. The cake is the relevance of its messages. Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) has to make some of the biggest choices of her life, then gets a chance to choose all over again. Will she stick with her choice? How will she decide? If you’ve ever second guessed yourself over things that matter, there is something here for you!

We need to talk about the life of the earth that flows through her, the waters. On Sat, July 30, part of the Jacob's Well community and several others took part in the Nibi (Water) Walk from the headwaters of Minnehaha Creek at Lake Minnetonka to the Minnehaha Falls where we gathered on Sunday. Sharon Day, Anishinaabe native, led the Sat. walk of presence with the spirit of the water. On Sunday we talked about our relationship with water and all of creation, and afterward joined in a picnic and went to the nearby confluence of the creek and the Mississippi where the Nibi Walk ended.

Why are some of the most basic facts of life so hard to talk about? Sex, money…and death. How could talking more openly about dying actually be life-giving? Does God bring something to the conversation beyond shallow platitudes? Whether it’s with our parents, our doctors, our kids, our friends….conversations about aging, disease and death come to us. Melissa Lock and friends will help us open up to these conversations that matter and see how taking a more honest look at dying gives glimpses of life at its fullest.
