Why Listening is So Hard
Thursday Dec 14, 2017
Thursday Dec 14, 2017
An excerpt from "Everybody Loves A Baby: A Special Gift" by Greg Meyer. You are called to make a difference. What you may not be aware of is that listening deeply and openly to others may be the way you can make the biggest difference. Greg Meyer explores two of the obstacles that keeps us from truly hearing others so that understanding can happen. Listen in.

'Tis the Season to Change Men's Behavior Towards Women
Tuesday Dec 12, 2017
Tuesday Dec 12, 2017
Listen to this excerpt of the message from Dec. 10, 2017 ("Everyone Loves a Baby: A Special Child"). Greg Meyer deals with an issue that we need to talk about; the wave of accusation and truth telling around sexual misconduct and assault that is sweeping up so many men today. Believe it or not, this reflects the Christmas season in which we welcome God breaking into our world to change things, not leave them the same. We all need to own the role we play in condoning and promoting this behavior that has victimized women for centuries and needs to change.

Midrash of John 8.1-8
Monday Dec 11, 2017
Monday Dec 11, 2017
We learn from hearing each other's stories. The ancient Jewish tradition of midrash takes a story from the Bible, sometimes only a line or few words, and creates a new story around it. The purpose of midrash isn't to try to be true or accurate or not, but to explore the characters and ideas in the biblical text. It is a way of wrestling with God as Israel is charged with doing. This week Melissa Lock plays out the character of the woman from John 8.1-11. Listen to her story.
This midrash is from week three of "Everyone Loves a Baby" entitled, "A Special Child." Listen to that podcast.

Everyone Loves a Baby: A Special Child
Monday Dec 11, 2017
Monday Dec 11, 2017
Everyone wants their child to be special, until it makes their child stand out too much. It’s pretty easy to get excited about the special baby Jesus too, as long as his specialness is all about stars, shepherds and angels. But when it means he stands for peace, no matter what, or uses his power for love, despite the cost, it makes us nervous. You are special too; special because you, like Jesus, have a calling to be about peace and love, no matter what. Are you willing to be that special?
Listen to the midrash from John 8.1-11 that was shared along with this message HERE on our Jacob's Well Podcast.

Everyone Loves a Baby: A Mind of Their Own
Sunday Dec 03, 2017
Sunday Dec 03, 2017
Don’t you hate it when those adorable toddlers, so eager to please, start having ideas, then interests, and finally values and lives of their own! We know it’s good, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Mary and Joseph swooned over their baby in a manger, only to see him turn into a regional activist with a price on his head. Do you still love him? Was it bait and switch? Let’s hear the story again.

Everyone Loves a Baby: Choosing a Name
Sunday Nov 26, 2017
Sunday Nov 26, 2017
Everyone Loves a Baby - Choosing a Name.
Someone picked out a name for you. If you have a child, you’ve done the same for them. Beside your birth name you have other names given you by yourself or others. They tell you who you are and aren’t, can be and can’t be. They empower and limit you. Christmas is built around a child who was named Jesus. He had other names as well to live up to, or to live down. Today the name Jesus is loaded with meaning and baggage. Let’s get past the talk, listen to his story and see if his name is one we’d choose to be known by.

Divided We Fall: Every Journey Has a First Step
Sunday Nov 19, 2017
Sunday Nov 19, 2017
Listening to know and be known is the building block of compassion. Compassion is the door to recognizing our common humanity. Our shared humanity paves the way to solving real problems in lasting ways. This day we’ll hear stories from our community that make us rethink what we thought we knew. We’ll also take a dive into what real influence is and how it happens in a diverse and complicated world. God is one and seeks for us to be the same.

Divided We Fall: It's Your Turn
Sunday Nov 12, 2017
Sunday Nov 12, 2017
There is no way to start breaking down the walls that divide us than getting to know each other, with no agenda but to know and be known. This week we practiced telling and listening to our stories, and it’s not too late to tell yours! We also looked into what keeps us from hearing each other's stories. This isn’t just fun, this is God stuff. God is the great storyteller who stops at nothing to know yours. Always inviting you to listen back.
