Everyone Loves a Baby: A Special Child

Everyone wants their child to be special, until it makes their child stand out too much. It’s pretty easy to get excited about the special baby Jesus too, as long as his specialness is all about stars, shepherds and angels. But when it means he stands for peace, no matter what, or uses his power for love, despite the cost, it makes us nervous.You are special too; special because you, like Jesus, have a calling to be about peace and love, no matter what. Are you willing to be that special?

Don’t you hate it when those adorable toddlers, so eager to please, start having ideas, then interests, and finally values and lives of their own! We know it’s good, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Mary and Joseph swooned over their baby in a manger, only to see him turn into a regional activist with a price on his head. Do you still love him? Was it bait and switch? Let’s hear the story again.

Everyone Loves a Baby - Choosing a Name.  
Someone picked out a name for you. If you have a child, you’ve done the same for them. Beside your birth name you have other names given you by yourself or others. They tell you who you are and aren’t, can be and can’t be. They empower and limit you. Christmas is built around a child who was named Jesus. He had other names as well to live up to, or to live down. Today the name Jesus is loaded with meaning and baggage. Let’s get past the talk, listen to his story and see if his name is one we’d choose to be known by.

Our shared humanity paves the way to solving real problems in lasting ways. This day we’ll hear stories from our community that make us rethink what we thought we knew. We’ll also take a dive into what real influence is and how it happens in a diverse and complicated world. God is one and seeks for us to be the same.

Polarized politics, racial divides, international standoffs. The split is so great it is infecting our families and friendships. Walls of disagreement separate us. Arguments drive the wedge deeper until the only people we know and listen to are the ones on our side. Maybe no one will ever win. What if we got beyond winning and tried understanding? What if we listened… deeply? Not to argue a point, but to get to know the person we always disagreed with. Our stories can do what our debates cannot.

The Inner Selfie: When All Else Fails

We’re all perfectly able to deal with what life throws at us until we get to what we aren’t prepared for. Obviously… When you hit your limit depends on the situation and the subject. You might move that point, subtract or add things from the ‘pushes me over the edge’ list, but you will never perfectly immunize yourself from what distracts, hurts, and frightens. So what will you do when all else fails? Let’s talk, let’s practice. There is life beyond success.
