May 13 was Mother’s Day; a day with all sorts of baggage, good and, well, not-so-good. But at the heart of motherhood is something that applies to everyone, all the time, everywhere. It’s relationships. And if there is anywhere we get stuck over and over again that’s it. So for the next handful of episodes we will be exploring Third Ways for our world of relationships. What better way to honor moms, kids, and just plain people than to find a way to grow and bloom with those we love, live, work and play.

Third Way Having

The writer of the book of Ecclesiastes 1000s of years ago reflected on having wealth that exceeded anyone on earth and using it to have anything and everything and noted, “It all adds up to nothing.” Now I might like to verify that for myself… but I think I already know the answer. Having stuff or not having it isn’t the issue. Those are the stuck positions we get trapped in. It’s time to escape the trap and discover an alternative. Ready to take a Third Way look at ‘having’? We love the social movements of the past, because they are convenient, and match what we already believe. We also love significant positive changes in our past, because we have all the benefit with little pain. Third Way Believing

Do you believe in God? Maybe you’ve got a resounding “Yes!” or “No!” to that question, but more and more people report that their answer doesn’t quite fit in either category. If you are one of those people it probably doesn’t mean that you ‘sort of believe’ or ‘half-way believe’. It probably means that there is a better question, a Third Way to look at this topic that is more complex than a check mark in Box A or Box B shows. Let’s take a look at what a Third Way approach to believing looks like!

You’ve been there… you know, that place where you are sure you were right, dug your heels in, stood your ground, maybe even belittled the other side. And... you were going nowhere. Stuck. What is so great about being right AND stuck? There must be something because we spend a lot of time that way. There is an option, however. It isn’t just another position, but a different way of being. A Third Way.

It couldn’t be more perfect for an irreverent church like Jacob’s Well than to have Easter fall on April Fools' Day. Miss Manners says to ignore April Fools', it’s not holy like Easter. But our instincts run a different direction. Sometimes truth is found in funny places and we think this is one of them. Enjoy!

Thoughts and Prayers: Entering the Space

If you could talk naturally to anyone, wouldn’t it be someone who knows you inside and out? And whatever God is, wouldn’t God know you that way more than anyone or anything else? Yet we think talking to God is hard, it has to be done a certain way, it can only be about certain things, or that we aren’t good enough at it. Does that make sense? What if…we saw prayer as a space that we could enter more fully, unfiltered, more ourselves than anywhere else?
