Election day 2018 gives us a moment to consider what it means to contribute and to have community. Voting is important, and just the start of our civic engagement...and definitely not the only place we feel the tension of what it means to see our lives as a contribution and ourselves as part of a community.

USED and not used up!

Scientists believe only 2-10% of the capacity of our genetic code is used. The rest is left on the table, or in the cell, or something… Anyway, while that may be necessary for reproducing human bodies, it isn’t an excuse to leave our human capacity on the table in a world that needs us. I’m sure you aren’t holding back, you probably feel overwhelmed and overscheduled already. But over- or under- used, it’s worth a conversation because being used is one of the best things that can happen to you, and to us.

Speaking From Experience: Not This, but That

Speaking from Experience is all about sharing wisdom, not just information, opinions and news. The gospel writer Matthew was trying to let us see that Jesus was in the wisdom business. But the shroud of story and thousands of years of change makes it is easier to dismiss than understand him. The story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, is one story that needs unfolding. Not because you are supposed to believe it, but because it holds inside something you want to learn.

The Miracle happening draws us into viewing the world through different eyes. It asks questions about how we experience the world around us as it’s happening. The stories of the Bible can feel like a book about a far away land in a faraway time with little to say about how we live. What if the Bible was a way for us to recognize how the world works in a different way and how we can be a part of the miraculous happening now.

A long, long time ago someone got ‘woke’ by Jesus and after spending years with him realized the One Thing that the world was really all about.
