What elephants do you see? While we had input for all three weeks, we thought we’d leave this last week up to what we hadn’t thought about or hadn’t worked in. So let us know. Talking about the elephants in the room isn’t about wallowing in the mud holes of doubt but about exposing those mud holes to the light of day so they become solid ground to walk on. Healthy, thinking and honest communities name their elephants out loud. Ready?

When we announced this series, the first elephant mentioned was “What if there is no God?” I guess that would pop the church balloon… “And since you asked, what if there isn’t a heaven? Or a hell? Are we supposed to think there is, or not? And what about my Muslim co-worker and the Buddhist my cousin married? And the Bible, don’t even get me started about the Bible…” Let’s get the elephants out in the light where we can see them. We can’t solve all these God issues, but we sure can keep them from tripping us up on this complicated journey of faith.

Have you seen this elephant in the corner? Here’s what it looks like: RULES. There are sooo many of them! From the 10 Commandments to things like “you’re supposed to go to church.” The Bible is full of rules and we ignore most of them, why do we get stuck on some of them? And if God really is all about relationships, then what role do rules play? Any you are wondering about?

So when was your last ‘vision quest’? The Bible may not require them but they sure happen a lot: Moses, Noah, Israel, Elijah, Jonah, John the Baptist, Jesus, Paul to name a few. Men are called into the wild to settle a score; not to prove they are manly, but to thrust them into an uncontrollable world where they face the forces that mold them. While that ‘quest’ might happen in a physical wilderness, the real wild is within. It is the battle for the heart, soul, mind and strength of a man. Let’s talk. Let’s journey.
